Peter Capaldi took joined the long running series Doctor Who in 2013. He played the 12th incarnation of the Doctor and took great care when it came to choosing the clothes that he wanted for his version of the Doctor.
It is common for each Doctor to have some kind of iconic article of clothing, such as Matt Smith's bow tie, suspenders, and fez, or Tom Baker's long and colorful scarf, and Capaldi is no exception. He is most often seen wearing a black coat with red lining.
I have thoroughly researched what this version of the Doctor wore and had so that you can easily recreate your own 12th Doctor costume. From his clothes to his Sonic Sunglasses, here is everything you need if you want to dress up as the 12th Doctor.
Do you live outside the United States?
Mandatory Accessories
Sonic Screwdriver
Every Doctor has some variation of a sonic screwdriver, but each one has a slightly different appearance. It seems that each Doctor modifies the screwdriver to better fit his personality. You might notice that Capaldi's sonic screwdriver looks almost identical to Smith's, but his lacks Smith's red tail button and flip cap. And, no, it still doesn't work on wood!
Sonic Sunglasses
When the 12th Doctor's sonic screwdriver went missing he declared that he was "over" sonic screwdrivers and created sonic sunglasses as a replacement. Apparently, they do the same thing as the screwdriver but are more stylish and protect the Doctor's eyes (do they need to be protected?).
The glasses are black, with oversized lenses, and look just like glasses worn during the 80s. They give the Doctor a retro look, which I admit I love!
Wallet With Psychic Paper
The Doctor carries a wallet that has business card sized psychic paper inside. The psychic paper mentally absorbs and shows people whatever they expect to see on the paper, which usually grants the Doctor and his companions access to places they otherwise couldn't go. It doesn't always work, but it has gotten the Doctor into and out of many situations. This is a must item to include when you dress up in a Doctor Who costume.

Dark Blue Coat and Vest
Peter Capaldi took great care when it came to choosing clothes for his incarnation of the Doctor. He ultimately decided on a dark blue coat (jacket?) with red lining. It looks refined, yet subtle, thought the 12th Doctor is often anything but. I have seen officially licensed coats, cosplay coats, and custom coats. Most, if not all, of what I saw also comes with a matching vest.
Oh, one more thing. Button the top button only. That is a stylistic touch that Capaldi added to his look.
White Shirt
A white shirt was the most common shirt worn under the coat and vest. Go for a dress shirt with long sleeves and button-up collar, completely buttoned, including the sleeves. And whatever you do, do not wear a bow tie! Capaldi's Doctor is neither casual nor whimsical.
White Dress Shirt
Dress Pants
Some Cosplay versions of the 12th Doctor's costume include pants, but it is more likely that you will buy a coat and vest without pants. It might be difficult, to find an exact match but as long as they are dark blue you should be fine. Or, you could go black - the choice is yours.
Boots & Shoes
I'm not sure if the Doctor wore boots or shoes so I included links to both. Go with the style you are most comfortable with, but just make sure they are black and shiny. His shoes are wingtip, which is the pattern seen in both images below, so wearing wingtip shoes or boots would be most faithful when you dress up as number twelve.
Optional Accessories
Red Velvet Jacket
The dark blue coat wasn't the only one that Capaldi's Doctor wore - he also wore one that was red velvet. This is a great option if this look fits your personality better than the other coat.
Hoodie
The Doctor occasionally wore a black hoodie under his coat. It was all black with a zipper.
Black Hoodie
Costume T-Shirt
Want to look like the 12th Doctor without wearing a full-blown costume? Then this shirt is perfect for you! It is a shirt that is made to look like the shirt, vest, and jacket worn by Capaldi.
Gold Ring
Capaldi's Doctor wore a ring that had a thick gold band and an amber gem. The ring you see here can be fitted so that anyone can wear it, regardless of your finger size. This is perfect for Cosplaying!
Confession Dial
We learned in the ninth season of Doctor Who that the Doctor has something called a Confession Dial, which is the Gallifreyan version of a last will and testament. As of this writing I haven't seen an exact replica of the dial, but I did find a pendant on Etsy made to look like the dial used by the twelfth Doctor. Having said that, I've included links to several sources with the hope that people will eventually make them.
Guitar
Were you surprised to see the Doctor playing the electric guitar in several episodes of season nine? I was! It turns out that Peter Capaldi plays the guitar, and that many years ago he was in a rock band called Dreamboys (changed from the original name of The Bastards from Hell).
You can add a guitar to your costume. Don't have one? That's okay. There is a very inexpensive guitar meant as a learning guitar for children that looks almost identical to the one used by the Doctor.
Silver Hairspray
Peter Capaldi has a full head of hair that is full of silver. You can achieve this same look by using temporary silver hair color.

Spoon
Who knew the Doctor carried a spoon around in his pockets? We found out that he does during his fight with Robin Hood. A spoon will be a nice touch to have with you when you dress in a twelfth Doctor costume.
