There is a house in Northwest Ireland that was transformed from an ordinary house into what now resembles a Hobbit home. The house might be completely above ground, but I have a feeling that Frodo would feel at home in here.
The home had to be excavated to improve the foundations, and that is when the make-over began. The walls, both outside and in, are covered in cob. Cob is an ancient material made of mud mixed with straw that is still used today.
The inside of the home is warm and inviting. There is an old fashioned wood burning fireplace in a room that has lovely curved walls and bench. The rooms have plenty of windows in a variety of sizes and shapes, as well as soft corners. In fact, I didn't see a single sharp corner in the entire home.
One of my favorite parts of the home is a room that has a wooden door that is angled at the top to fit the sloping ceiling. Just like the rest of the house, the angles on the door are soft, not sharp, which helps make the home so inviting.
The kitchen is gorgeous! There is another lovely wooden door leading into the kitchen, and plenty of cabinets made of natural looking wood.
Speaking of wood, there is a bunk bed (or is it a loft bed? I couldn't tell for sure) that is made of wood. But, unlike wooden bunkbeds found in furniture stores, the rails on this bed are made from tree branches. The look is very appealing and I can easily imagine a pair of Hobbit feet sticking out at the bottom of the bed.
The tree branch look is continued in other parts of the house, such as a railing at the top of a set of stairs. At least, that's what I think it was. It might also have been a gate to keep small children or pets out of a certain part of the home.
