The second book in the Lord of the Rings trilogy, The Two Towers, introduced us to Rohan, a grassland realm that allied itself with Gondor. Although many of the Rohirrim (residents of Rohan) were farmers, Rohan was well known for their calvary and horses. Their army battled primarily by horse and they were impressive to see.
The tattoo you see below was inspired by the banners of Rohan. In Peter Jackson's second LOTR movie, Riders of Rohan were seen carrying banners that had a horse's head on them. Horses were the symbol of Rohan for the reasons I explained above.
This tattoos is gorgeous! It is abstract in the sense that it is more of a silhouette of a horse's head and mane, but it is also a wonderful representation of a banner. The horse's man flows down the arm and looks a lot like the way royal banners from the middle ages often looked. In this case, it looks like a banner that has no wind to prop it up.
