Gene Roddenberry didn't have a big budget when he created the original Star Trek series so he needed an inexpensive way to get Starfleet personnel from the USS Enterprise to planets. The end result of this dilemma was the Transporter pad.
Technically speaking, it was fairly simple to make it look like people disappeared and reappeared elsewhere, yet the concept was incredibly advanced, which was perfect for a sci-fi story set far into the future.
